Flower, also known as bud or nug, is the most popular form of marijuana. Flower is the dried and cured smokable part of the marijuana plant. It’s versatile, easy to use and has been a beloved form of marijuana consumption for years!

With smokable marijuana flower on its way to Louisiana this has many people wondering, what do I need in order to be ready?

At Louisiana Marijuana Card, we want to be more than just your go-to medical marijuana card provider. We want to be a source of information that you can trust! So today we will be covering everything that you need to know before smokable marijuana flower comes to the state.

Smokable Marijuana Flower in Louisiana

Before this bill was signed only products derived from marijuana oil were legal in the state. This was a complicated situation in Louisiana because marijuana oil is highly processed, which makes it priced higher. Patients with medical marijuana cards were only able to purchase non-smokable forms of marijuana such as edibles, tinctures or topicals. This program was very restrictive to some.

Now that HB 391 was passed, smokable flower will be in full effect on January 1, 2022. Until then you won’t see marijuana flower in dispensaries but you will in less than four months!

How Do I Use Marijuana Flower?

So now that marijuana flower is legal in the state, how do I use it?

Smoking marijuana is one of the most well known ways of using marijuana. It’s a great method of consumption because the effects kick in quickly and the smoking method allows you to have more control over your dosing. Depending on how much you smoke, the strain and your body chemistry, effects can last anywhere from from an hour to three hours!

The most popular methods of smoking marijuana flower are as follows:

  • Joints

    • A joint is very similar to a cigarette but with marijuana instead of tobacco. It consists of ground up marijuana flower rolled with smokable rolling paper.

  • Blunts

    • Blunts are very similar to joints except they are thicker. Blunts consist of ground up marijuana flower rolled with a blunt wrapper or into an empty cigar casing.

  • Pipes

    • Pipes are less popular than joints and blunts but are still well loved. Their advantage is that all you need is to put the ground marijuana flower in the pipe and use a lighter or a match to combust it.

  • Bongs

    • Bongs are another version of a pipe but use water to filter the marijuana smoke through.

How Do I Dose Marijuana Flower?

Dosing marijuana flower varies depending on the strain, the potency, the cannabinoid content and the terpene profile. I know these sound like a lot of factors but believe me, once you try a few you’ll get the hang of dosing marijuana flower properly in no time!

The potency of marijuana flower is measured by the concentration of cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the compounds that are found in the marijuana plant that give off physical effects, whether they are psychoactive or not. The two most famous cannabinoids are THC and CBD. These will be expressed in percentages in the flower that you purchase from a dispensary.

Since THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid, you can use this simple list as a potency cheat sheet:

  • <10% THC

    • This percentage has a more mild effect which means that it is great for novice users.

  • 10-20% THC

    • This range gives off medium effects meaning it is stronger for beginners and comfortable for more experienced users.

  • 20%+ THC

    • These are some of the stronger strains that you will find and should definitely be left to those that know what they’re doing.

Keep in mind that this cheat sheet is not all encompassing. It is a general guide that you can use but know that everyone is different. As long as you start low and slow you will be good to go!
