What Kinds of Edibles Can You Find at Louisiana Dispensaries?

Louisiana is slowly breaking into the medical marijuana market, offering a diverse range of products and options for patients who have received a Louisiana marijuana certification.

But despite a wide range of options for different cannabis product types, there are only a handful of approved edibles being sold at Louisiana pharmacies. In this article, we’ll cover what edibles are available at Louisiana marijuana pharmacies, and how to choose the right products for you!

Many Product Categories, Limited Options at LA Dispensaries

Since 2019, residents of Louisiana with a medical marijuana certification have been able to shop at any one of Louisiana’s 9 approved marijuana pharmacies.

While you might be able to shop for a variety of different product types, once you’ve decided on the type of product you want, your choices get a little bit smaller. For example, you can choose from many different product types such as tinctures, creams, edibles, and concentrates, but once you’ve picked your type, your options are usually limited to one or two available products per category.

As of right now, Louisiana’s medical marijuana market suffers from a bit of polarization, and a limited number of specific products. However, that’s likely to change in 2022 when they expand their operations.

And with LSU ramping up marijuana cultivation, even more products will be available in the coming months.

Medical Marijuana Accessible for Louisiana Patients, Regulations are Tight for Products

Louisiana boasts a lot of access for medical marijuana patients, offering telehealth services for getting your medical marijuana certification, protections for banks and physicians, as well as offering doctors the ability to grant a marijuana certification for any condition they believe a patient will benefit from.

However, when it comes to products and cultivators, regulation is much tighter.

For example, while vaping products are not available, metered-dose inhalers are available as a substitute.

And smokable cannabis flower was added to Louisiana’s cannabis portfolio recently, with an expected release in 2022.

What Edibles are Available in Louisiana Cannabis Dispensaries?

When it comes to edibles, the same strict regulations are in place, and there are only a few options to choose from when it comes to Louisiana edibles.

Louisiana’s regulations permit only the following edible products, with one product having a technical caveat:

· Gummy Edibles

· Tinctures

· Capsules or Pills

· Distillate*

*Distillate is technically edible, although traditionally designed to be vaped or smoked. Often, distillate is used for infusing edibles, and offers an option for the at-home baker to make their own edibles, but more on that later.

Choosing Edibles at Louisiana Marijuana Pharmacies

By far and beyond the most common (and traditional) form of edibles that are available at Louisiana pharmacies are the gelatin-based gummies.

These gummies are available at almost all Louisiana medical marijuana pharmacies, and they’re the go-to choice for convenience and ease of use, often coming in a 20mg per dose option.

Tinctures are not technically an edible, but because they are typically consumed orally, we’ll give them a pass.

Capsules or pills are also available, though they are a bit tougher to find and they typically come in a higher dose than the gummy edibles.

Distillate is a viable option, especially for those looking to bake up some brownies at home, and in truth, it’s the most versatile option.

For those who have dietary restrictions, or are unable to consume gelatin, distillate offers an opportunity for you to choose your own ingredients by infusing food products with THC distillate!

THC distillate is an oil extract from the cannabis plant usually containing a mixture of high THC content, some CBD, and terpenes, and can be found at most Louisiana pharmacies. It’s most frequently used for vaping, however the oil can be used to cook a variety of different food items.

For those with a bit of baking experience (or none at all, really), distillate can be used to make cannabis brownies, cookies, even full-on entrees can be made with distillate.

In fact, most edibles you can buy at any dispensary or pharmacy are likely made with distillate, so if you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck and want to put in a little extra effort, distillate is probably the way to go.
