Louisiana Is Increasing its Number of Medical Cannabis Dispensaries

Back in May, the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy reported that they approved about 43,000 medical marijuana patients since the inception of the state’s program. That’s a lot of relief!

Fast forward to today. It’s September, and thousands more have been approved for their medical marijuana cards. Clearly, there is a great deal of demand for cannabis products throughout the state.

That’s why the state has made public its plans on expanding. That’s right, new dispensaries will soon open in the Pelican State.

What Can You Buy at Licensed Louisiana Medical Dispensaries?

Thanks to the state’s new laws, smokeable flower is now available at Louisiana dispensaries!

Making this change created a shift to the program’s market when thousands more applications poured in to the Board of Pharmacy for medical marijuana cards.

Now, not only can you purchase tinctures, edibles, topicals, inhalers, and RSO’s but flower as well! The last thing we are keeping an eye out for is the addition to vapes in the state medical marijuana laws.

Sometimes, dispensaries in Louisiana even offer home delivery for your medicine. That’s right–you can now order your medicine from the comfort of your own home to be delivered right to your door!

How Does It All Work?

Currently, there are only nine operational dispensaries in Louisiana. State regulators have informed 7 of the active pharmacies that they are eligible to open a new “satellite” location.

Once a dispensary reaches 3,500 registered patients, they are eligible to open a second location.

The number of registered patients has increased by thousands, and the industry is still growing very quickly. The increase is probably due to progressive changes in the state’s law regarding smokeable flower, as well as the process becoming easier for a doctor to recommend marijuana to a patient.

According to new statistics, Louisiana’s pharmacies are doing millions of dollars in sales each quarter. Thankfully, this signals a lot of expansion to the state’s program coming soon.

When Will the New Dispensaries Open?

Although 7 dispensaries are eligible to open another location, only one has actually submitted the paperwork and applied to do so. That would be H&W Drug Store, which is located in New Orleans.

However, several other pharmacy owners have said they plan to open satellite shops very soon.

When all is said and done, hopeful Louisiana patients should be seeing some new dispensaries opening by the end of this year, or early next year. Although the number of dispensaries is growing in Louisiana, there are still only two licensed medical marijuana cultivators in the state.

Hopefully, the Board of Pharmacy will expand the number of available cultivation applications so the program can expand freely and comfortably.
