Good news, Louisiana! Smokable medical marijuana is officially coming to the Bayou State!
Louisiana has a history of being in the forefront of marijuana reform and puts its residents’ mental/physical health as a top priority. Back in May 2021, the Senate approved a bill for smokable flower for the state. All it needed was a signature from the Governor, and that is exactly what happened yesterday!
Smokable Medical Marijuana is Finally Legal in Louisiana!
On Tuesday June 22, 2021, Governor John Bel Edwards signed a bill which allows medical marijuana patients to have access to smokable flower! This means that patients will now be able to legally smoke whole-flower marijuana plants.
Doctors will now be able to prescribe marijuana in its smokable and raw form. Before this bill was signed by Governor Edwards, the state allowed limited medical marijuana forms to gummies, inhalers and elixirs. Legalizing smokable marijuana is a big step for the state and will hopefully set the tone for other states medical marijuana programs!
Allowing patients to have access to smokable flower will also increase the benefits that medical marijuana patients are looking to get from these products. Different strains can help different qualifying conditions allowing people to get better results for their pain!
How Much Marijuana Flower is Allowed for Purchase and Where Can I Get It?
Under this updated law, patients are allowed to be prescribed 2.5 ounces or 71 grams every two weeks per patient.
Pharmacies (also known as dispensaries) will be allowed to sell smokable marijuana to qualifying patients!
When Will This Law Go Into Effect?
According to John Davis, head of Wellcana (“Wellcana is a fully integrated and diverse Louisiana biopharmaceutical company based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana”), this new law has an effective start date of January 1, 2022. Flowers will also be available for purchase on January 1, 2022 at pharmacies.
